Wakefield Named CCSA Diver of the Week

8

Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics recently issued the following announcement.

Fifth-year senior qualified for NCAAs at Eagle Invitational.

After a big weekend at the Eagle Invitational which saw her qualify for the 1-meter NCAA Zone Championships, senior Megan Wakefield (Guelph, Ontario, Canada/Centennial CVI) has been named CCSA Diver of the Week.

"Congratulations to Megan on this well deserved recognition!" said head coach Dave Rollins. "The journey she has been on over the past 2 years, to get back to qualifying for Zones again is absolutely incredible.  She is a fantastic young woman and we could not be happier for her!"

Wakefield took first place in the 1-meter at the Eagle Invitational with 286.20 points, well above the 265-point standard needed to qualify for NCAA zones. She led a historic day for the Eagles as two other divers for the Green and Blue qualified for zones in the 1-meter - juniors Delaney Nelson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Isabeau Keene (Demorest, Ga./Tallulah Falls School). It is the first time in program history that FGCU has three divers qualify for Zones.

Wakefield's score of 286.20 points is the best in the CCSA this season. She also had a solid showing on the 3-meter at the Eagle Invitational as she finished third with 253.20 points.

This is the fifth time in Wakefield's career that she has picked up this honor, but first since 2018-19 season as she missed the 2019-20 season due to injury and then had to get back into diving a season ago.

The Eagles now have three Diver of the Week awards this year as Megan's sister, Reese Wakefield (Guelph, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Macdonelle CHS) has won it twice. Overall, the Green and Blue have six CCSA weekly awards as senior Petra Halmai (Dombovar, Hungary/Lanczos Kornel Secondari Grammar School) won Swimmer of the Week twice and Wiktoria Czarnecka (Lublin, Poland/Liceum NR 10 W Lublinie) took it home once.
