Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics issued the following announcement on Nov. 1.
Junior outside hitter earns third weekly honor of the season.
After guiding the FGCU volleyball team to a pair of wins over the weekend against North Florida (3-1) and Jacksonville (3-0), junior outside hitter Erin Shomaker (Granville,
Ohio/Granville HS) was selected as the ASUN Player of the Week on Monday.
Shomaker tallied 26 kills with just six errors (.282 hitting percentage), had 20 digs, posted three blocks and had two aces through seven sets. In the win over UNF, her 15 kills tied
her conference season-high and stood as her second-best total of the season. She also had a double-double against the Ospreys with 11 digs while adding three blocks. She nearly had a double-double against Jacksonville with 11 kills and nine digs.
"Erin has done a lot of things extremely well this season. But, the thing that continues to impress me the most is her overall consistency," said head coach Matt Botsford. "When
you think about what she is doing for us as a six-rotation player, it really is remarkable. This weekend she showcased her abilities in every phase of the game: from serve receive,to
attacking, from blocking, to floor defense and serving. She is finding ways to positively impact the direction of each match. Erin's reliability and efficiency as a player is a huge asset
to this team."
The Eagles remained unbeaten in ASUN play and extended their win streak to 14 matches - the fourth longest streak in the nation.
Shomaker currently leads the ASUN in points per set (4.40) and kills per set (3.76), while her 297 total kills ranks fourth. She ranks 68th nationally in points per set and 87th in kills
per set.
For her career, Shomaker's 772 kills rank as the ninth most in program history while her 3.4 kills per set is the fourth best all-time.
This marked the fifth weekly honor for the Eagles. Shomaker was also named the league's Player of the Week on Aug. 30 and Oct. 4, while Juliana Lentz was named the Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27. Skylar English earned Freshman of the Week honors on Oct. 25.
Entering the upcoming week, FGCU's 14-match win streak is the fourth-longest in the NCAA alongside BYU and Dayton. In this week's NCAA RPI, the Eagles moved up nine spots
to No. 41 after posting their six year in the last seven with 20-plus wins. Heading into this weekend, FGCU will look to surpass its best ASUN start in program history. The Green
and Blue currently stand 21-4 overall and are 13-0 in ASUN play. In 2012, the Eagles started league play 14-0 for its best start ever. FGCU is also six wins away from matching the
program's Division I record of 27 victories set in 2019 and 2016.
