The Barry Buccaneers outlasted the Bluefield State Big Blues 56-54 in overtime in non-conference women's basketball action from Cesar Odio Court on Sunday.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - Bluefield State's first three field goals were three-pointers as they built a 9-4 lead to start the game. Barry clawed the their way back into the game, tying it 12-12 on a layup by Ashia Pool with 1:21 left in the period. Essence Cowan' triple gave BSU a three-point edge at the quarter break.   | Big Blues 15, Bucs 12
  • 2Q - Lidsey Mahoukou came off the bench to score the first six points of the second quarter, giving Barry an 18-15 lead. Camilla Flefil followed with a three-pointer for a six-point edge. The Big Blues, however, hit two more threes, from Cowan and Roni Cox to knot the game back up. Barry pushed the lead back to six twice more in the period, including on a layup by Ashleigh Pink with 0:37 seconds left, before BSU hit a pair of free throws.  | Bucs 29, Big Blues 25
  • 3Q -  A Reagan Jackson bucket at 7:30 gave Barry its biggest lead of the game at 33-25. BSU used a 6-0 ruin over the next 6:42 to cut the lead to two. Flefil hit a three-pointer and Alexus Tucker hit a layup to make the lead three at the quarter break. | Bucs 38, Big Blues 35
  • 4Q -  Mahoukou gave Barry a four-point lead, 42-38 at the 5:55 mark. But Bluefield tied it back up 42-42 on free throws by Tucker. Cox put BSU up by one 45-44 with 1:32 remaining, but Barry rebuilt a three-point lead on a basket by Jackson and 2-of-4 free throws by Pink and Flefil. Tucker hit an off-balanced three-pointer with 0:09 seconds left to tied the game and Jackson missed a layup at the buzzer to send it to overtime.  | Bucs 48, Big Blues 48
  • 1OT - Cox hit 1-of-2 from the line with 1:11 left to leave the score tied 52-52, and the teams swapped buckets from Rosheda Guthrie (Barry) and Gabrielle Thomas (BSU). With four seconds left, Jackson got another chance at a buzzer-beater and this time came through for the win. Azariah Binford missed a shot at the end and Trinity Bosecker secured the rebound to seal the game.  | Bucs 56, Big Blues 54

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Mahoukou led three Bucs in double-figures with a career-high 14 points.
  • Jackson had 12 points, including the game-winner in overtime, and Flefil added 10.
  • Thomas led Bluefield State with a game-high 15 points and Cox added 11 off the bench. 
  • Barry out-scored BSU 32-14 in the paint. The Big Blues first two-point basket, and only one of the first half, came with 4:58 in the second period.
  • Thanks to 24 from Mahoukou and Flefil, Barry led 35-18 off the bench.
  • Bluefield scored 25 points off of 34 Barry turnovers, while Barry had 21 points on 22 BSU turnovers.
ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs are off until after Christmas, returning to the court to face Embry-Riddle on the road on Dec. 30.
