Event and Group Benefit Cancer Research
The Royal Dames of Cancer Research Inc. is hosting its 52nd Annual Tiara Ball to raise funds to support cancer research at Nova Southeastern University NSU’s Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research (RGI). The Royal Dames is a women-led charity, established to raise critical funds to support cancer research at RGI.
The Tiara Ball is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, November 19 at the Bahia Mar Hotel and Resort, 801 Seabreeze Blvd, Fort Lauderdale. The annual event, recognized as the premier gala of the South Florida social season, draws 200-300 of Fort Lauderdale’s most influential women and men for an evening of lavish food and drink, a luxury auction, and dancing. All proceeds from the event support cancer research at NSU.
“All our Tiara Balls are special, but what makes this one extra special is that we will have Tony Dovolani, a featured dancer and mirrorball trophy winner from “Dancing with the Stars” entertaining us,” said Royal Dames president Carole Nugent. “One lucky winner of our raffle will even get to dance with him.”
Presenting Double Diamond sponsors are Ken Meares of Great Healthworks and Dr. Sharon McQuillan. Joining them as Diamond Plus sponsors are Dr. Hal Garber and Mary Garber. The theme for this year’s ball is “Winter Wonderland” and is chaired by Sophia Mylona, principal owner of Thasos Greek Taverna in Fort Lauderdale. The event promises to bring all the glittering magic of winter to the ballroom. Tickets to the Tiara Ball are $350. Event sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are also available.

The event’s live auction will feature extraordinary items such as a six-day/seven-night Celebrity cruise with Retreat Suite accommodations and a private ride on the Goodyear Blimp, among other unique experiences.
The mission of the Royal Dames is to fund innovative research to find a cure for cancer as they believe that “mankind is not destined to die of cancer.” Since 2005, the Royal Dames have contributed more than $3.7 million to the NSU’s RGI, which is located at the Center for Collaborative Research on the university’s Fort Lauderdale campus. RGI is nationally recognized for its research patents and focus on drug discovery and development related to interventions for the most aggressive types of cancer such as colon, prostate and breast cancers.
“The support from Royal Dames is like a lifeline to all the cutting-edge research happening at the RGI of NSU,” said Appu Rathinavelu, Ph.D., the executive director of NSU’s RGI. “Because of the tremendous support from them, RGI can conduct several groundbreaking discoveries for developing new therapeutics and diagnostic tests for the early detection and cure of cancer.”
