Dive into an Ocean of Possibilities this summer with the Lee County Library System’s Summer Reading Program for all ages. The program runs from June 1 through Aug. 1 and features special events, an all-ages reading challenge and phenomenal prizes.
The goal of the annual Summer Reading Program is to nurture and grow a lifelong love of reading and learning. The Oceans of Possibilities summer program is divided into four age categories, Birth to Pre-K, Kids, Teens and Adults. This enables the program to be tailored to all types of learners with a variety of interests. While the Summer Reading Program is for everyone, the library system places a special emphasis on supporting young readers.
Every child and teen can pick up a brand-new, free book at their closest branch while supplies last. “The Summer Reading Program supports the development of daily reading habits and is one of the many ways the Lee County Library System helps students avoid summer slide by maintaining the learning gains achieved during the school year,” said Amy-Jane McWilliam, Youth Services Coordinator. Free, weekly special events for children and teens are back in the branches this summer.
Adult programs will be presented regularly as well. Local Lee County performers and educators will be entertaining children this summer across the library system, including Adam’s Animal Encounters, Sanibel Sea School, Joey Evans Magic and fishing guide and podcast host Capt. Debbie Hanson. All programs are free to the public. Please note that due to the popularity of summer programming, advance registration may be required for some events.
Program participants can log their reading and complete fun missions through the READsquared app or website to earn points toward prizes. There are three prize categories for each age group.
• Complete activities and accomplish the mission for your age group to earn an entry into the Mission Prize drawing for a chance to win puzzles, games, books and more.
• Earn a total of 300 points for an entry to win the Branch Prize Basket filled with a variety of books and prizes for the perfect summer. There is one winner, per age group, per library location.
• Participants who earn 500 points will be entered automatically into the system-wide Grand Prize drawing. This year’s prizes are: a Little Tikes 4-in-1 Playhouse for Birth to Pre-K, a Nintendo Switch with Super Smash Brothers game for Kids, an Oculus Quest 2 Virtual Reality Headset for Teens and a Kindle Fire digital tablet for Adults.
The last day to log reading and complete a mission online is Monday, Aug. 1.
