Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics issued the following announcement on Dec. 15.
Junior outside hitter earns second straight Honorable Mention All-American accolade.
After being named an all-region selection just over a week ago, junior outside hitter Erin Shomaker (Granville, Ohio/Granville HS) was tabbed an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-American as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
It marks the third time that an Eagle has earned the honor counting Shomaker's spring 2021 honor and Cortney VanLiew doing so in 2018.
"Erin is such a talented young woman and her contributions to this program are immeasurable. She has played such a significant role over the years in helping lead this program to new heights which is one of the many reasons I am so happy to see her being recognized at the national level," said head coach Matt Botsford. "As I have said on many occasions, Erin is one of the top players in collegiate volleyball. Being named All-American Honorable Mention is a testament to what a phenomenal season she just put together and how well respected that body of work is."
Shomaker had an outstanding year to earn the pair of AVCA honors following the season.
She earned her second consecutive ASUN Player of the Year honor in leading the Eagles to their second ASUN Championship title and NCAA berth. In leading the Green and Blue to a 27-6 overall record, she led FGCU in kills (413), kills per set (3.86), service aces (33), and points (478.5), while adding 215 digs and 58 blocks. During the season, she was a three-time ASUN Player of the Week.
Shomaker led the ASUN in total kills (69th nationally), kills per set (70th nationally), points (63rd nationally), and points per set (4.47, 61st nationally).
In the all-time record book, she's quickly climbing several lists for the Eagles. She ranks 7th all-time for career kills (888), 4th for kills per set (3.5), 9th for total points (1,023), and 4th for points per set. This season, her 413 kills were the 8th most for a single-season as were her 478.5 points.
In her career at FGCU, she has been a two-time unanimous selection to the All-ASUN First Team, a two-time pick to the ASUN All-Tournament Team including the 2021 Most Outstanding Player, a member of the 2019 ASUN All-Freshman Team, and the 2019 ASUN Freshman of the Year. Nationally, she was an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American and Honorable Mention All-Southeast Region pick last season as well as a VolleyballMag.com Honorable Mention All-American.
