Nova Southeastern University issued the following announcement on Dec. 15.
Sharks Looking Forward to Return to Diamond
After a condensed 2021 season, the Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team makes its return to the diamond in year two under Head Coach Laz Gutierrez in 2022. The schedule features a month full of Shark home games, as the entire month of February, NSU will play from the NSU Baseball Complex to begin the campaign.
"We're excited about the 2022 schedule. It's a challenging schedule that features a difficult conference slate in unquestionably the toughest conference in Division II Baseball," said Gutierrez. "We also host several nationally ranked non-conference opponents and have a heavy home schedule. We wanted a majority of home games to help bring our student body and community together after two difficult years and wanted to provide an opportunity for a night at the ballpark, while also showcasing top level college baseball."
The first pitch of the year will be thrown against Catawba on Thursday, Feb. 3, which begins a three-game home weekend, featuring games against Washburn and Wheeling Jesuit the next two days. The following weekend, NSU welcomes Valdosta State on Feb. 11 and West Georgia on the 13th, with a doubleheader against Missouri Southern in between. The Sharks will host Felician for the first series of the season, a three-game set beginning on Feb. 18, then open Sunshine State Conference play with a series against Embry-Riddle on Feb. 25-26.
NSU travels for the first time on March 1 for a neutral-site game in Orlando, as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, before returning to their friendly confines of the NSU Baseball Complex to host Davenport in a three-game series beginning on March 4. The Sharks continue their home stand by taking on American International on March 8. Nova Southeastern hosts Tampa in a Sunshine State Conference series on the weekend of March 11. NSU will then head to West Palm, Fla., to take on Caldwell in a neutral site game on March 16.
The Sharks travel to Melbourne, Fla., taking on Florida Tech in a three-game SSC series from Seminick-Hall Field starting on March 18. The following weekend, NSU hosts Lynn beginning on March 25. A mid-week game against the Buccaneers of Barry on March 29 sets the tone for a weekend tilt against Saint Leo at Southard Stadium in St., Leo, Fla., which starts on April 1. The Sharks longest road trip of the season concludes in a mid-week matchup against Palm Beach Atlantic on April 4.
Nova Southeastern then hosts Eckerd starting on April 8, with a doubleheader to be played the following day, before taking on St. Thomas in a South Florida match-up on April 12. NSU takes on Palm Beach Atlantic in SSC road series on April 15 and 16, before reciprocating with the Sailfish for a mid-week home game on April 19.
NSU closes the 2022 season with three consecutive Sunshine State Conference series, starting with traveling to Barry (April 22-24), then hosting Rollins (April 29-May 1), and ending the regular-season with a series on the road against Florida Southern beginning on Sunday, May 8.
"I'm proud of how our young men have prepared for the upcoming season. The resiliency that they have demonstrated during these trying times have prepared them for this challenging schedule," continued Gutierrez. "We have high expectations and I believe that this team will live up to those standards."
