The Keiser women's basketball team led wire-to-wire en route to an 80-49 victory over Voorhees College Wednesday afternoon to close out the 2021 Thanksgiving Classic.
TURNING POINT
After Voorhees cut the Keiser lead to two, 9-7, with 3:08 left in the first quarter, the Seahawks closed the period on a 6-0 run and never looked back.
FIRST QUARTER
Keiser 15, Voorhees 7
- The Seahawks opened the quarter on a 7-0 run with Shykim Gillion, Andressa Nascimento and Angela Denis each contributing a bucket.
- Voorhees finally got on the board with 6:39 remaining and put together a 7-2 run to draw within two, 9-7.
- That was as close as the Tigers would get as Keiser closed the quarter with six straight points.
- Elliana Schaefer led the charge for the Seahawks during the run, netting five of the six points.
- In the quarter, Keiser pulled down 20 boards to the Tigers eight.
Keiser 39, Voorhees 20
- Nascimento extended the run to 8-0 with a layup to start the second quarter before Ty'Shemia Bunkley ended the Voorhees drought with a triple.
- After the Tigers drew within seven, 19-12, Keiser used a 14-1 surge to stretch their lead to 20 as 4:06 showed on the clock.
- Four different Seahawks added to the scoreboard during the run led by Kaitlyn Fertig's six points.
- The two sides traded baskets back-and-forth over the final four minutes as Keiser took a 39-20 lead into the break.
Keiser 63, Voorhees 35
- Back-to-back baskets by Gillion and Denis, following a pair of free throws by Voorhees, pushed the KU lead to 21, 43-22, with 8:37 showing on the clock.
- With 4:32 remaining the period, the Tigers drew within 20 but the Seahawks answered with 10-2 spurt to close out the third with a 63-35 advantage.
Keiser 80, Voorhees 49
- A 12-4 surge to start the fourth stretched the Seahawks lead to their largest of the game, 75-39, with 7:34 left in the contest.
- Taylor Jones jump-started the run with a pair of free throws, while Gillion closed out the surge with six consecutive points.
- Voorhees scored 10 of the final 15 points as Keiser went on to win 80-49.
- Keiser improved to 8-2 on the year with the win.
- The Seahawks have now won five of their last six contests.
- On its home court, Keiser remained a perfect 4-0.
- The victory marked the second of the season against Voorhees for the Seahawks.
- Keiser led wire-to-wire in both matchups this year.
- All-time, the Seahawks improved to 6-4 in the series history with the Tigers.
- The Seahawks were outstanding defensively, holding the Tigers to 26.8 percent shooting.
- Offensively, Keiser shot at a 43.5 percent clip from the field.
- Schaefer and Gillion led the attack for Keiser with a game-best 12 points each.
- Denis, Jones and Nascimento contributed with nine points apiece.
- Nascimento put together a strong all-around game, finishing with nine points, six boards and a game-high five dimes.
- Denis hauled in a game-best 10 boards in the win, while Gillion and Elise Ellison-Coons added seven each.
- On the glass, Keiser out-rebounded the Tigers 57-25.
