HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Sharks started slow in Monday's match, surrendering four shot attempts to the Panthers in the opening 9:43 of the first half.
The sluggish start soon caught up to NSU, though, as Florida Tech grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute on a bicycle kick by Marem Ndiongue.
Brianna Paige and Emma Brown both tested Florida Tech keeper Maria Sanchez Recuero in the 25th and 27th minutes, yet were turned away before both sides eventually entered halftime with the Panthers clinging to the 1-0 edge.
NSU opened the second half with visibly more energy, racking up five shots in the first 7:13. Of the five attempts, though, three were off target and the other two were once again stymied by Sanchez Recuero.
Maribona pushed a shot attempt wide left in the 76th minute. It was her header in the 82nd that nearly equalized, yet Sanchez Recuero deflected just enough of the ball to pop it over the crossbar and out of play, ending the Sharks' hopes of advancing.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
NSU keeper Shannon Hearty collected two saves in the effort.
Both teams recorded 11 shots a piece, with the Sharks holding a 7-3 advantage in shots on target.
Silva paced the Sharks with a team-high three shots, while Maribona and Dani Correa registering two each.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
NSU split the season series with Florida Tech, taking down the Panthers by a 1-0 margin back on Oct. 2.
Florida Tech will now advance to face Palm Beach Atlantic in Thursday's semifinal round of the SSC Tournament.
