Florida Gulf Coast University Athletics issued the following announcement on Sept. 15.
Eagles turn in strong performance at challenging course featuring top collegiate programs.
The FGCU men's golf team shot 301 in the third round, seven strokes better than its Tuesday performance, to finish 12th overall at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational on Wednesday at the Maridoe Golf Club. The Eagles posted a 54-hole total of 906 which was just two shots shy of 11th-place TCU.
"I'm proud of the guys for their overall performance to start the year; today we had a great front nine again," said head coach Andrew Danna. "They started strong, but unfortunately made some mistakes in the later rounds. We'll look to clean up those mistakes as we get ready for our next competition."
Oklahoma, last season's NCAA national runner-up, won the overall team title shooting 861 for the tournament paced by a third-round 281 on Wednesday. Texas finished second (862), while Arizona State took third (866). Along with FGCU, the ASUN was represented by Liberty which placed fifth overall (877). Overall, the field featured five preseason top-10 programs and eight in the top-25.
Arizona State's Cameron Sisk won the individual title after shooting 209 thanks to a par on No. 18 to break a tie with Texas Tech's Baard Skogen.
The Eagles were led by Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn./Northwest Christian HS/Alabama) who tied for 34th after shooting a two-over par 74 on Wednesday to finish with a three-day score of 225. Brady Madsen (Raymond, Minn./MacCray HS/Winona State) had his best score of the tournament in the third round as he shot 74 as well to finish tied for 41st. Jon Hopkins (Bishop's Stortford, England/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) tied for 44th after shooting 76 for the third straight round, while Austin Cherichella (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona HS) tied for 48th (230). Pierre Viallaneix (Apopka, Fla./Winter Park HS/Western Carolina) rounded out the Eagle line-up with a 54-hole total of 234 to tie for 60th.
On the front nine Wednesday, Madsen led the Eagles going two under, while Capan was one under at the turn and both Cherichella and Hopkins were even. All told, FGCU tallied nine birdies on the first nine holes with Capan, Hopkins and Madsen each having just one bogey.
On the back side, the Eagles ran into trouble, particularly on holes No. 14 and No. 16 where FGCU went plus-10. Viallaneix had the best performance on the final nine as he finished two over with a birdie on No. 15 to go with five pars.
FGCU will head to Gadsden, Alabama, on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 27-28, as the Green and Blue take part in the Graeme McDowell Invitational hosted by UAB.
