Florida Gulf Coast University lost to Queens University of Charlotte with a score of 6-5 on April 17. The game took place at The Stick, where FGCU made a late comeback attempt but fell short after Queens scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The result is important for both teams as it affects their standings in the ASUN conference. Both teams are now close in conference records, with FGCU at 7-8 and Queens at 7-9.

Javier Gorostola hit a home run and collected two hits for FGCU, while Evan Dempsey also homered among his three hits. Preston Rogers pitched over an inning without allowing a hit and struck out two batters. Wilfred Gonzalez contributed an RBI single and reached base after being hit by a pitch. Sebastian Lippman was charged with the loss after giving up one run on one hit over one-third of an inning.

For Queens, Hunter Huneycutt drove in two runs with a single and stole a base. Justin Hudson delivered as a pinch hitter with a double that brought home two runs late in the game. Lenox Lively led his team offensively by going two-for-three with an RBI and drawing an intentional walk. Jackson Gowan started for Queens, pitching nearly seven innings and allowing only two runs on six hits.

The scoring began early when Gorostola homered for Florida Gulf Coast in the first inning, but Queens responded quickly by putting up three runs in their half of the second frame through timely hitting from Huneycutt and capitalizing on errors. After trailing most of the game, FGCU tied it up at four apiece before Hudson’s double gave Queens back the lead they would not relinquish.

Both teams will meet again on Saturday evening for another matchup in Charlotte.
