Florida Gulf Coast University secured its second consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference series sweep with a 5-2 win over West Georgia on May 10 at Swanson Stadium. The Eagles came from behind for the twelfth time this season, scoring two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to defeat the Wolves.
The game held special significance as it followed Senior Day celebrations and a pregame graduation ceremony for three players who missed Commencement while playing in DeLand. Florida Gulf Coast (33-17, 16-10 ASUN) trailed entering the seventh inning but rallied to secure their sixth weekend series sweep of the season.
Evan Dempsey led FGCU’s offense with three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Reflecting on the day, Dempsey said, “I’ve got a lot of love for the seniors. I live with two of them, Jarrett Nelson and Nathan Gagnon. I actually walked out with Nathan and Jarrett today, a really special moment.” He added about his performance: “For me, I think it’s Mother’s Day. We had a great ceremony before.” Hunter Possehl pitched seven innings allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out four batters to improve his record to 4-1. Ashton Pocol closed out the game with two perfect innings for his fourth save of the season—his tenth career save at FGCU.
West Georgia took an early lead through Anthony Cole’s RBI groundout in the second inning before Dempsey tied it up with a solo home run in the third. The Wolves regained their advantage in the fourth but were overtaken by FGCU after key hits from Dempsey and Jon Embury during decisive late innings.
Following this victory, FGCU will host Florida Atlantic on May 12 for its final home game before heading into an important away series against Jacksonville that could determine second place in their division.
Looking ahead to those matchups, Dempsey said: “We have to stay focused on what we can control instead of worrying about, oh, what did North Florida do today? Did they win? OK, great, that kind of thing. We’re playing for us.”
