Florida Gulf Coast University announced on May 11 that its baseball team will play its final home game of the season against Florida Atlantic University on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Eagles, currently on a seven-game winning streak, hope to continue their momentum before heading into a three-game series at Jacksonville beginning Thursday.
The outcome of these games is significant as FGCU holds a record of 33-17 overall and 16-10 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The team’s magic number to secure a bye in the ASUN Tournament is one, while North Florida also needs just one win to clinch the divisional crown.
Florida Atlantic enters Tuesday’s matchup with a record of 27-26 overall and 12-12 in conference play. The Owls are tied with Memphis for fifth place but are only one game behind UAB and Rice for third place in their league standings. FGCU has already played both teams this season, winning two games against FAU in Boca Raton but losing the most recent meeting at home on April 28.
Earlier this year, FGCU won only one out of three games against Jacksonville when they played in Fort Myers. Head Coach Dave Tollett said he wants his team to “head into the postseason on that hot streak” despite needing just one more win to secure their position.
Tuesday’s contest will also mark the last time at least six Eagles players take the field at Swanson Stadium this season, following Senior Day celebrations held Sunday.
