Diana Akopova And Marija Borcic Named Volleyball SSC Players Of The Week

 Barry sophomore Diana Akopova and Barry senior Marija Borcic were both named SSC Volleyball Player and Setter of the Week, for the week of Sept. 5-11.

Akopova picks up her second Offensive Player of the Week award this season following 6.0 kills and 1.4 blocks per set over two Barry wins. In a 3-1 win over Nova Southeastern, the Russian put up 24 kills on 60 attempts with eight errors for a .267 hitting percentage. She also provided the Buccaneers with 10 digs, three blocks, and an ace in the win. Akopova followed with 18 kills on 38 attempts and six errors for a .316 hitting percentage as Barry swept Palm Beach Atlantic. Defensively, the sophomore put up seven blocks, including three solos, and two digs against the Sailfish.

The award is the second one for Akopova on the season and second for her career.

Borcic claims Setter of the Week following Barry’s 2-0 start to the SSC season. The Serbian averaged 11.9 assists over seven sets while leading the Buccaneers to a .271 team hitting percentage. Borcic provided Barry with 51 assists, 11 digs, four aces, and two blocks in a 3-1 win over Nova Southeastern to open the week. She followed with 32 assists, four digs, a block, and an assist in a sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic.

The award is the first of Borcic’s career and the third for the Buccaneers as a team this season.

Barry will travel to play Rollins next at Warden Arena in Winter Park, Fla. The match is Friday Sept. 16, and first serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
