The City of Cape Coral reminded residents on June 1 to take steps now to prepare their homes and families for the 2026 hurricane season. Officials said early preparation can help reduce property damage and improve safety before severe weather arrives.

Homeowners are advised to inspect trees around their properties, looking for damage and using licensed professionals when necessary. The city also recommends choosing appropriately sized native species to minimize future storm hazards. Cleaning gutters and downspouts is another key step, as keeping them clear of debris helps prevent water intrusion and flooding.

Residents should address any roof repairs in advance of storms, including considering truss tie-downs to strengthen the structure. The city also encourages assembling a 72-hour hurricane kit with essential supplies such as food, water, medical items, pet needs, lighting, hygiene products, important documents, cash, and simple entertainment stored in a sturdy plastic bin.

Officials recommend reviewing and updating insurance coverage well ahead of any forecasted storms, and suggest obtaining flood insurance if eligible since policy changes may take several weeks to go into effect.

Residents are encouraged to download the City’s Hurricane Guide in English or Spanish for additional information on staying safe during the storm season.
