Eagles are one of 113 teams at NCAA Division I level to earn the honor, including one of just three in the ASUN.

For the second consecutive year, the FGCU baseball team has been honored as a recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Award presented by Sports Attack

The Eagles were one of 113 NCAA Division I programs to earn the honor and one of just three teams in the ASUN along with Liberty and Bellarmine.

“We take great pride as a program in classroom performance,” FGCU baseball head coach Dave Tollett said. “I’m happy for our guys because they worked hard for this recognition and for us as a program to earn it for the second-straight year shows how our program is dedicated on and off the field.”

This past year, FGCU posted a 3.09 GPA and have been above a 3.0 for 12 consecutive semesters. Redshirt-junior outfielder Brian Ellis led the way for the Eagles as he was named to the ASUN All-Academic Team and became the program’s first CoSIDA Academic All-American in addition to being an All-ASUN performer on the field.

FGCU finished 35-23 overall this past year, including a 17-13 record in the ASUN. The Eagles advanced to the ASUN Tournament, but were eliminated after going 1-2 in pool play.

In order to be considered for the ABCA Team Academic Award, a team must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale during the 2021-22 academic year.

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its nearly 13,000 members represent all 50 states and 33 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth.
